Large format photography is experiencing a revival with advent of digital imaging. There is so much magic in large negatives and seeing the image on a huge ground glass. Be part of the revival. Bring your own camera and learn how to utilize its full potential. This workshop is currently aimed at film photographers in black & white and/or colour.
The workshop covers types of large format cameras, features and benefits of various camera models, tripods and camera supports, loading film into darkslides & using quickloads, focusing the view camera, controlling perspective & image shape, controlling depth of field through tilts, swings and by aperture, using filters, and determining correct exposure.
The methodologies of various large format photographers will also be discussed, as will their work and working methods. You will gain an overview of photography composition. By the end of the two (2) day workshop you will have developed some of your black and white photographs to see your results.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Identify the features and benefits of various large format cameras (monorail, flat beds, non-folders, field cameras etc) and the various different formats currently available.
- Focus your large format camera while understanding and utilising depth of field (using hyperfocal scales, circle of confusion and the ground glass)
- Load film correctly into dark slides and demonstrate there appropriate use, including quickloads & readyloads.
- Describe the features and benefits of different films and determine the correct exposure for black and white negative, colour negative, colour positive (transparencies) films.
- Describe and demonstrate various photographic working methods for location scouting, framing and image capture.
- Choose the correct lens for your composition.
- Correctly set up and use a tripod and other camera supports.
- Use swings, tilts, shifts and rise/fall to control image shape and depth of field.
- Develop your own film (to do this at home you will need to acquire the appropriate equipment and chemicals)
- Identify appropriate resources to carry into the field, for comfort, safety, and camera repair & maintaince.
Note: students who only complete one day will not be able to achieve all the stated learning outcomes.
