BLURRY LENS

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd August, 2014

Shift your focus at this weekend workshop with fine art photographers Len Metcalf and Shirley Steel.  Have some fun and forget about sharp focus – create beautiful, soft, expressionistic images instead!

Anyone can take a photograph that’s out of focus.  So what makes a blurry image wonderful?  Your workshop will start in Len's studio with a presentation of blurry images and the techniques used to create them.  Through studying these photographs you will develop an understanding of what makes a blurry photograph exceptional and how you can emulate these effects.  We will examine blurry composition so that you know how judge your work. We will also talk about bokeh and how you can use it to improve your photography.

Then we’ll move to a location with water views to put your new knowledge into practice. Experiment with plastic and soft focus lenses and different filters.  Play around with moving your camera as you shoot.  Dance your photographs into being!

At the end of the day we will return to the studio to go back through our work and review the images we’ve created and what we’ve learned.  On the second day we will follow a similar schedule, returning to the studio early enough to print our best work.

As a ‘beginner’, I found the explanation of theory, followed by practical demonstration as excellent way to learn. The lessons from this course have increased my learning, and my abilities in photography.
